Many
parents and carers with Autistic kids will understand when I say that
it is very common to be confronted with some unusual and ritualistic
obsessions by our kids.
These
moments have come about for A.J. as well, although his obsession
isn't a specific item or thing, it consists of his verbal expression
as he continually asks questions about anything and everything;
becoming fixated on a specific topic, ideal, or word, and needing to
know all there is to know and then not being satisfied there wanting
to gain more, questioning every angle and point.
This
can go on for days, weeks or months, until one day he will come out
chatting about another topic and the cycle continues again.
…....A.J.
loves learning, soaking up every last piece of knowledge and data he
can find and consume, although he may find the silliest of topic
subjects to 'need' to know and talk about.
He
may come out with a single word, only to ask if I know it's meaning,
and then go on by trying to find a different meaning or concept
regarding that word.
One
obsession he has had for some time now has been the different types
of Governments such as – Monarchy; Communism; Dictatorship;
Democracy; Republic; Fundamentalism; Despotism; Anarchy;
Constitutional; Federation; Socialist; Parliamentary; etc;
........he
will go on and on about one or another types of systems and try to
gain more; as much information as possible regarding each, or try and
confuse me with a specific content fact.
Another
topic he is fixated on at the moment is 'his' version of the
different forms of LOGIC.
So
I thought I'd give you a look into the challenging mind at work.
This
topic first came about while A.J. stated that other people don't
understand 'his' form of logic, and then went on by saying that
everyone else's perception of logic doesn't contain a true
understanding of the different forms.
He
then started telling us how 'he' has the understanding of the
following ......
Factual
Logic...... …”the fact as it is”
Technical
Logic..... ...”every factor is categorised and then simplify to
the most correct”
Superiorally
Quoted Logic... ...”when someone official states what something
has to be”
Politically
Correct Logic... ...”the government stated common sense
choice”
Democratic
Logic... ...”when people vote fairly on which choice is to be
agreed upon”
…..and
that is the way it will be, as A.J. believes it to be.
Naturally
he will go on and on about this and continually expand his theories
in the different areas.
Every
evening as hubby and A.J. together start doing the dishes I can hear
A.J.'s voice flooding through the hallways as he becomes excited and
specific about his theories and ideas, sharing them with his “Poss”
poppy, and prompting him to become engaged and shares his theories
to compare with his own.
These
special moments although meaningless to some are the highlight of
A.J.'s day,
he
will then spend another half hour or more repeating it all to me
explaining that....
“Poss
knew that....” …. “Poss never knew this...” ….. “Poss was
surprised with this....” and more.
Engaging
in any form of communication is so important to our kids, always find
time to listen, it doesn't take much to hear them out and confirm you
have hear them.
Happiness
and Calm to all xxxx
